I have been an active fantasy player for the past 15 years with quite a bit of success. While the outcome of the actual individual performance is out of our control, we can make educated decisions with information. I believe the more information that we have at our disposal the more informed our roster construction will be.
I am religious about gathering as much information as I possible can. I get my information from a variety of sources, be it websites reading articles from fantasy experts, like Matthew Berry. Twitter is a must, as I create this blog I hope to add a twitter feed with the various people that I follow. A couple years ago my new vehicle came with XM radio and I stumbled upon the XM radio station, Roto Experts. There are lot good sources of information out there, but if you're not following or listening too Matthew Berry (ESPN), Scott Engel (Roto Experts) and my personal favorite Adam Ronis (Roto Experts), you need to create a Twitter account and follow them. They're fantastic in what they do and I soak in as much as they have to say and go from there to make my fantasy line-up decisions.
Just to give you an idea of valuable they have been to me. I started out with Fantasy Football because it was what fit into my schedule the best and it was my favorite sport to watch. A few years back I tried giving Fantasy Baseball a try and to put it bluntly, it was a disaster. I think by the All-Star break I had essentially given up. I played baseball and watched it regularly, but that doesn't make you good at Fantasy Baseball. It definately helps, but how do you construct a roster? Which waiver-wire pick-ups do you make? Who are the minor league call-ups that can help you down the stretch run? Most baseball fans don't know about those kind of things until it actually happens and in Fantasy Baseball, it's too late by then.
So, I stumbled upon the Roto Experts on XM Radio during football season and every morning on my way to work I would listen to Scott Engel and Adam Ronis, needless to say I was hooked. So, I thought you know what, I'll give fantasy baseball another try. I'm going to keep listening to these guys once football is done and get as much information on baseball as I can. I learned about different types of leagues, strategies. I was a pretty much a Roto player and knew what head-to-head was (similar to Fantasy Football), but heard about point leagues and did some digging into that to find out what it all entailed.
I decided to enter into a some of ESPN's free fantasy leagues and give Fantasy Baseball another try. Instead of entering into all the same types of leagues, I was going to do a little bit of each. I entered into a total of 5 leagues to try out different types of scoring and different types of strategies. I entered into 2 head-to-head point leagues, 2 Roto leagues and 1 Roto head-to-head league.
Anyway, armed with the info I had been hoarding from the guys at the Roto Experts I was going to give Fantasy Baseball another try. I'm hear to tell you, information is the key to fantasy success. At the beginning of August I was in first place in all 5 of these leagues. I was decimated by injuries late in a couple of the leagues and stumbled a bit, but I finished the year with 2 championships, 2 runner-ups and one 3rd place finish.
The following year, I decided to put my money where my mouth was and decided to enter 3 money leagues. Now, in my experience the more money in the league, the better the competition. I'm not saying go out there and enter into the big money stake leagues, but find something you can afford to do, but you want something more than the spare change you find in the cup holder in your vehicle. You will stay more engaged and so will the competition because there is more at stake. The minimum I enter into is $100. I entered into 1 of each of the following (H2H points, H2H roto and full season roto). With being informed on strategies, players I was successful once again winning 2 championship and one runner-up. Now, I'm hooked on Fantasy Baseball, nearly as much as my first love Fantasy Football.
So, that is why I'm putting together Deft Fantasy? There is a lot of information out there, some is good some is horrible, you need to decipher between the two. I will be giving my fantasy advice, and will forward you information from credible, proven winners.
Good luck!

Welcome
What is Deft Fantasy? Well, it's a little bit of everything fantasy related. I'm starting out focusing on my two favorite fantasy sports, football and baseball. This will be a combination of fantasy information, advice, insight, strategy and a community where fantasy players can share their successes, frustrations and my favorite, the unbelievable wins and losses that came about from an unlikely force bestowed upon you from the fantasy gods.
